Welcome to Joan Johnson Porter’s LifeMapping/Resources * HeartMath (R) Coaching

We all have to handle some form of overwhelm…
our own, our family and friends’,
and in our businesses and practices.

We are already overtaxed so
just piling on more work to handle things
is not something that will help.

We need to discover how to accomplish more results…in our personal lives, with those we work with and those we serve.

And we need to be able to put one erg of energy into our work and get multiple results ergs out. We need to be able to accomplish more with less time and efforting.

Welcome

I’m Joan Johnson Porter. Years ago an almost head-on 100mph car accident left me with a 4″ skull fracture and profound amnesia.

I had to start over with learning how to choose what to eat next on my dinner plate and with reconstructing my list of favorite foods.

Even with brain damage and amnesia, I realized that I was seriously hurt and the medical treatment of morphine and a pat on the head was not going to do enough to get me back on my feet.

Living in a house with a few thousand books, enough sewing and craft supplies to befit a small store and a piano with stacks of marked up classical sheet music, I surmised that I had had a life before the accident…and I wanted it back.

I wanted to be able to read those books, make quilts and play music again.

I don’t know how I got the idea to “do projects” and “make tools” for myself, but I’m glad I did. Those two ideas were ones I could keep in mind and work on.

My first project was to take a shower and get dressed without forgetting what I was doing or having a panic attack.

The second one was to relearn the names of foods and remember what my favorite foods were.

To do those projects I had to create reminder tools for myself to remember what I had decided to do and the steps to do it. I could write, but not read, so i began by making marks on index cards that I carried around with me. Somehow I was able to mostly remember the meanings I assigned to those marks.

As I recovered, those marks became words, then phrases and eventually maps of the situations I needed to understand.

Recovering from amnesia required relearning how things worked in an unfamiliar world.

Since I had little to no memory, every day was a new day…no kidding.

Because I didn’t remember how things had been, discovering how completely new to me daily events was always the first task.

A few years after the accident I was surprised to learn that the tools I had invented and was using to function were helpful to others in a variety of areas including business, education and health.

Now we find ourselves in a world where the kinds of issues I had to deal with in isolation are present in one form or another for almost everyone.

I’m looking forward to sharing the LifeMapping Resources and HeartMath(R) tools and techniques with you so that you don’t have to invent a version of them on your own…wholesale learning rather than the retail way I had to do it.

Welcome to LifeMapping Resources. Tools that work at the speed of life today.

I look forward to meeting and working with you. We all face challenges that people haven’t faced before…and the path is better when we can work together with maps and methods that can empower us to go beyond surviving to thriving.

Blessings, Joan

How can we do that?

We expand the scope of what we can see to include the components that matter now in a world where deep change and increasing pace is the norm.

We have to have the tools…maps and methods…that make that possible.

Have working practices that are effective at the speed of life today.

…and how can we do that?

The LifeMapping Resources are actual maps that make it easy to put thought systems…i.e., non-physical ideas and situations…on paper where we can see them. The maps and methods make it possible to work in whole systems…so we can see the issues and access points…without having to study whole systems.

The maps and methods reveal the new conditions and elements as global changes land in our daily lives.

We tap into things we know, but have not utilized like this before. These materials augment the skills you already have and expand what you can do as well as how well you can do them.

Let’s dig right into some first steps and examples.

The first step in handling overwhelm and being effective is to handle two things that can stop us in our tracks.

First, and foremost: Being overwhelmed is not a character flaw.

Only a few years ago, being overwhelmed was not such a general condition. At that time, we had a tendency to think that being overwhelmed was a failure on our part or a character flaw. And that can be a paralyzing experience.

People getting a giant jigsaw puzzle piece up a hill.

Fortunately for us, being overwhelmed is not a character flaw. If you were hit by a truck and your leg was broken, would you accuse your leg bone of having a character flaw because it had been hit hard enough to be broken? No.

When we are overwhelmed, we have been hit by an emotional truck and taken a hit. Being overwhelmed is not a character flaw. Period.

People working together to build a bridge.

Secondly, when we are overwhelmed we can find our minds going blank.

We can fuzz out…or not be able to recall basic things we know, let alone be able to figure out hard hitting new conditions.

There are several ways to handle the brain fuzz.

For fast immediate results we can use change language to get around our own snag…as well as use it to assist others in getting around theirs.

For fast turnarounds and building long term inner resilience, we can use HeartMath(R) focused breathing techniques.

Change Language

In the Overcoming Overwhelm Master Class we begin with basic change language examples, but we don’t stop there. By learning how and why change language works, we learn to invent change language that is tailored to work for specific people and their circumstances.

Basic change language terms are:

“Up to now I (thought of it this way), and now I can think of it (fill in the preferred new way of thinking about it.”

“If I did know, what would it be?”

A LifeMapping tool that addresses this issue a little more broadly is the Pain into Power Sequence.

The Pain into Power Sequence, a brief introduction

This Sequence has two questions. The first one you answer and the second one you live within and let it continue to unfold.

Question 1: If all the frustrations, failures and lingering issues in your life were in an energy bank account that you could use to achieve your goals, what would your balance be?

Most people say it would be a sizable sum.

Now turn your attention to the goal or challenge you are addressing, and ask yourself:

Question 2: How would this look if I had learned the wisest, most empowering lesson from every event in my life?

In the Overcoming Overwhelm Master Class we go into detail about how to get the most out of this exercise. You can begin to work with it now by asking yourself the question and letting ideas flow and using your favorite method of recording your ideas. You can journal on paper or audio recording.

The 10 week master Class begins with basic change language and how to utilize it to empower yourself and others.

From change language we look at:

  • The new indicators that reveal how to evaluate changing conditions and respond in ways that undercut overwhelm and build resilience and effectiveness.
  • The LifeMap that reveals three choices we have made, and can remake, that set us up for success or failure.
  • How to map a conflict to discover the unexpected keys to solutions.
  • A LifeMap called The Stage/Condition Map the provides a way to understand how and why it seems like eve4yone is playing by different rules…and be able to see what is needed to bridge gaps and create understanding.
People supporting a bridge for other people to walk on.
